Update from the 2020 General Assembly of the Church of God in Brazil

The Church of God in Brazil held its annual General Assembly on July 25, 2020. The general assembly is typically held at the Instituto Teológico Boa Terra in Curitiba, Paraná. Due to the pandemic the meeting was held via Zoom for the first time. This was a big deal for the Amazonia region of Brazil because Curitiba is nearly 2,000 miles from where we live. Most years only two or three pastors from our region are able to participate due to the cost and time involved in traveling to Curitiba. This year we had about 15 pastors from Amazonia participate.

The general assembly was opened with President Harri Muller sharing greetings and a prayer. Pastor Cézar Ricardo then shared a devotion. Pastor Cézar also shared with the General Assembly that Brazil will be hosting the CIID conference next year on 19-22 October, 2021 in Santarém, Pará. It has long been a desire of Amazonia to act as host for this event, and the pastors of the Amazonia region of Brazil are excited to receive delegates of the Church of God from across Latin America. The CIID conference takes place every two years, and has never before been to our region of Brazil.

A major component of the general assembly this year was voting for new national leadership. Ballots were emailed out in advance. Beginning September 1, 2020, the new national president will be Pastor Cézar Ricardo with Pastor Marcio Drager serving as vice president.

As Pastor Daniel Pureza shared, “An historic moment! The election of the first president of the Church of God in Brazil from outside the south and southeast regions and from the northern region of Brazil!”
